Dominican Man Shot by Immigration Agents During Arrest in New York City
Federal immigration agents shot and wounded a Dominican man while arresting him in New York City on Thursday, in what the Department of Homeland Security described as a “targeted enforcement operation.” Protesters condemned the incident as an example of the dangers posed by the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration.
The man survived the shooting and is receiving treatment at a hospital, the Department of Homeland Security said. However, the agency did not provide details about what led to the shooting. It stated only that “during the incident, an ICE officer discharged his weapon,” injuring the man.
The department described the man as a “criminal illegal alien,” claiming that he had a previous conviction for grand larceny and a history of other arrests. According to the agency, he was arrested in December 2023 but was subsequently released. The department blamed what it called “reckless” policies in Democratic-led cities, including New York, for his release.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called for an end to all Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in the city in a statement.
Demonstrators gathered at the scene and chanted, “ICE off our streets now!”
An FBI spokesperson said an evidence response team was heading to the scene “to support our partners at the Department of Homeland Security.” The spokesperson provided no further details. Messages seeking additional information were sent to federal authorities.
The New York Police Department said in a post on X that the man who was shot was conscious and receiving treatment at a hospital. The department also clarified that its officers did not witness the shooting and were not involved in the incident.
